Report on Istanbul Symposium

by Dr Mike Davidson

December 15, 2023

The Third International Symposium of the ‘World Child and Family Protection Platform’ took place on the 8th and 9th of December this year at the Baglarbasi Cultural Center in Istanbul, Turkey.

The event heard from 27 professionals from Turkey, plus a further 2 from the USA (David Pickup and Dr Joseph Nicolosi), and Dr Mike Davidson from the UK.

Dr Mike Davidson presented at the symposium speaking on the Title “Opposing Therapeutic Bans Internationally – Why it Matters and How to Protect Client Choice and Professional Integrity”. The first session can be watched here. On day 2, in a collaboration with US therapist David Pickup, case studies were briefly presented and discussed.

This is the 2nd such conference Mike has attended. In 2021 he was encouraged by the concern of Turkish professionals to resist the current collapse of respect for client autonomy and therapeutic choice that we are witnessing amongst the professional mental health bodies in the UK, Americas and Western Europe. Media interest in the 2021 event was also encouraging at the time. Watch the short Turkish report here.
